The 3 Types of People Who Say Hypnosis Doesn't Work on Them

Spoiler: they're all wrong. When someone says they can't be hypnotized, they're usually in one of three categories.
Type 1: The Controller
'I'm too analytical.' 'My mind is too strong.' 'I just can't let go of control.'
This person equates hypnosis with losing control and unconsciously resists entering trance to maintain dominance. They're fighting a battle that doesn't exist.
The reality: hypnosis isn't about losing control. Brain imaging shows executive function remains active during hypnosis. You're not surrendering control—you're redirecting it inward.
The fix: Reframe hypnosis as developing greater control over internal states rather than relinquishing control to someone else. The analytical mind isn't a barrier—it can be engaged as an active participant in the process.
Type 2: The Performance Anxious
'I tried but nothing happened.' 'I don't feel any different.' 'I'm doing it wrong.'
This person is so focused on whether they're 'doing hypnosis right' that they can't relax into the experience. They're monitoring their performance instead of letting the process unfold.
The reality: There's no specific feeling you're supposed to have. Hypnosis feels different for different people. Some experience profound shifts in consciousness; others feel like they're just relaxed. The internal experience varies widely.
The fix: Stop evaluating and start experiencing. The more you try to check if hypnosis is happening, the less it can happen. Accept whatever arises without judgment.
Type 3: The Expectation Mismatcher
'I was aware the whole time.' 'I could have opened my eyes whenever I wanted.' 'It's not like the movies.'
This person had hypnosis, they just didn't recognize it. They expected a dramatic loss of awareness—something that doesn't occur in hypnosis—and dismissed their actual experience as 'not real hypnosis.'
