What is Progressive Relaxation?
A technique involving systematic tensing and releasing of muscle groups to achieve deep physical relaxation.
Progressive relaxation (also called progressive muscle relaxation or PMR) is a technique developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobson in the 1920s. It involves systematically tensing and then releasing different muscle groups throughout the body.
The process typically starts with the feet and moves upward, or begins with the hands and face. By deliberately tensing muscles for 5-10 seconds and then releasing, you become more aware of the contrast between tension and relaxation.
Progressive relaxation is often used as an induction technique in hypnosis because the deep physical relaxation naturally leads to mental calm. It's also effective on its own for stress relief, sleep improvement, and anxiety reduction.
Regular practice helps you recognize and release tension more quickly in daily life. Many people find that after learning PMR, they can achieve similar relaxation with just a few deep breaths.
