What is Depth Testing?
Techniques used to assess how deeply someone is in hypnotic trance, often through physical or verbal challenges.
Depth testing refers to techniques used to assess how deeply someone has entered a hypnotic state. These methods help practitioners gauge responsiveness and tailor their approach, while also potentially deepening the trance through the testing process itself.
Physical depth tests might include suggestions for heaviness ("Your arm is so heavy it cannot be lifted"), lightness ("Your arm is floating upward"), or catalepsy ("Your arm is rigid, locked in place"). If the suggested experience occurs, it indicates a certain level of trance depth. More profound phenomena like spontaneous amnesia or positive hallucinations suggest deeper states.
Verbal depth tests often involve asking questions in ways that reveal trance characteristics. "What feels different right now?" might elicit responses about time distortion, physical sensations, or altered perception. The quality of the response—whether analytical or experiential—indicates depth.
For self-hypnosis and audio programs, formal depth testing is less relevant since there's no observer. However, understanding depth indicators helps you recognize your own trance experiences. Signs of deepening trance include feeling heavy or floating, losing track of time, reduced awareness of surroundings, and vivid internal imagery. Recognizing these signs can increase confidence in the process and naturally enhance receptivity to suggestions.
