What is Fractionation?
A technique of repeatedly bringing someone in and out of hypnotic trance to deepen the experience with each cycle.
Fractionation is a hypnotic technique where the practitioner repeatedly guides the subject in and out of trance, with each cycle typically resulting in a deeper state. It's based on the observation that the transition into hypnosis often becomes easier and deeper with repetition.
The process works on multiple levels. Physically, each relaxation cycle helps release more residual muscle tension. Mentally, the repeated transitions train the mind to enter focused states more readily. And psychologically, the experience of successfully entering and exiting trance builds confidence and reduces any lingering resistance.
In practice, fractionation might involve suggestions like "In a moment I'll count to three and you'll open your eyes, then close them again and go even deeper." Each emergence is brief—often just a few seconds—before guiding back into trance. Some practitioners use fractionation throughout a session, while others employ it primarily during the initial deepening phase.
For self-hypnosis audio programs, fractionation elements might appear as brief "awakening" moments followed by renewed deepening suggestions. This technique is particularly valuable for people who initially experience only light trance, as it provides a structured way to gradually access deeper states over time.
