What is Resource State?
A positive emotional or mental state that can be accessed and utilized for support in challenging situations.
A resource state is a positive emotional or mental state—such as confidence, calm, creativity, or courage—that can be deliberately accessed and utilized when needed. In hypnosis, we work with resource states both by helping you access them more readily and by connecting them to situations where they'll be helpful.
Everyone has experienced resource states, even if they didn't label them as such. Times when you felt naturally confident, moments of deep calm, experiences of creative flow, or periods of courage and determination—these are all resource states. The challenge is that we often can't access these states when we most need them. When facing a stressful situation, the stress itself blocks access to our calmer, more confident self.
Hypnosis offers several ways to work with resource states. You can learn to recall and intensify resource states—vividly remembering times when you felt the way you want to feel now, and amplifying those feelings in the safety of trance. You can anchor resource states—creating triggers that help you access them quickly when needed. And you can transfer resource states to specific contexts through future pacing.
The beauty of working with resource states is that you're not trying to create something artificial—you're learning to access more of what you already have. Every resource state you work with in hypnosis is built on actual experiences you've had. You're simply developing the skill to call upon these inner resources intentionally rather than waiting for circumstances to activate them naturally.
