What is Parts Work?
A technique that works with different 'parts' of the personality that may have conflicting needs or desires.
Parts work is a hypnotic technique based on the understanding that our personality isn't a single, unified entity but rather a collection of different "parts" or sub-personalities, each with its own perspective, needs, and positive intentions. When these parts conflict—such as a part that wants to relax versus a part that feels guilty about not being productive—inner tension results. Parts work helps harmonize these internal conflicts.
The concept recognizes familiar experiences like "part of me wants to exercise, but part of me wants to stay in bed" or "I know I shouldn't worry, but I can't help it." Rather than treating these as simple lack of willpower, parts work acknowledges that different aspects of ourselves have legitimate needs and positive intentions, even when their strategies create problems.
In hypnosis, parts work typically involves identifying a specific part (like "the part that procrastinates"), establishing respectful communication with it, understanding its positive intention (perhaps protecting you from failure or exhaustion), and negotiating new strategies that honor its concerns while serving your overall well-being. The trance state facilitates this inner dialogue by quieting the critical mind and allowing deeper access to these internal dynamics.
Parts work is particularly valuable when you feel stuck in internal conflict or when simple willpower approaches haven't worked. By honoring all parts rather than trying to suppress or override them, lasting change becomes more achievable. The part that was creating resistance often becomes an ally once its needs are acknowledged and addressed.
