Settling In
(Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed. Sit or lie down, and prepare to relax deeply.)
"Close your eyes gently now. Take a deep breath in through your nose, slowly filling your lungs completely. Hold it for a moment... and now, exhale slowly through your mouth, releasing any tension you might be holding onto. Feel a wave of relaxation begin to wash over you, starting at the top of your head.
Take another deep breath in... and as you exhale, imagine that wave flowing down through your forehead, softening your eyebrows, relaxing the muscles around your eyes. Feel your jaw relax, letting go of any clenching. Your face is smooth and peaceful.
Breathe in deeply once more... and as you exhale, feel that wave of relaxation flow down your neck and shoulders, releasing any tightness. Your shoulders drop, heavy and comfortable. Let that soothing sensation move down your arms, through your elbows, forearms, wrists, and into your hands. Your hands may feel warm and tingly, completely relaxed.
Continue to breathe deeply, rhythmically. With each inhale, draw in calm energy. With each exhale, release any remaining tension. Now, focus that wave of relaxation down your back, from your upper back, through your mid-back, and into your lower back. Each muscle in your back softens and loosens, supporting you comfortably.
Feel the wave move into your chest and abdomen. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your belly with each breath. All the organs in your core are relaxing, feeling soft and warm.
Now, guide that wave of relaxation down through your hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, and into your feet. Feel your feet resting heavily, completely relaxed, from your heels to your toes.
You are now deeply relaxed. Your body is heavy, comfortable, and at peace. You are safe and secure. Allow yourself to sink deeper and deeper into this wonderful state of relaxation with every sound you hear, every breath you take."
"Imagine yourself at the top of a grand staircase, a staircase of pure white marble, with ten steps leading down to a beautiful, serene space. With each step you take, you will go deeper into relaxation.
I will count down from ten to one, and with each number, you take another step down, sinking deeper into a profound state of calm.
**Ten**... stepping down, feeling yourself relax even more deeply.
**Nine**... letting go of any stray thoughts, focusing only on my voice.
**Eight**... feeling your mind quiet, becoming clear and receptive.
**Seven**... deeper and deeper, peaceful and serene.
**Six**... half-way there, completely comfortable.
**Five**... a wonderful sense of tranquility washes over you.
**Four**... releasing all tension, all worries, all concerns.
**Three**... feeling profoundly calm, completely at ease.
**Two**... almost there, drifting into perfect serenity.
**One**... you are now in that beautiful, serene space, completely relaxed and open to positive change."
"In this deep state of relaxation, your subconscious mind is highly receptive. We will now implant powerful suggestions to elevate your darts performance.
1. **Cultivating a Winning Mindset:**
"From this moment forward, you approach every darts match with a **winning mindset**. You **believe in your ability to win** and perform at your highest level. You eliminate thoughts of not wanting to lose, and instead focus purely on the positive outcome of winning. Your **self-confidence** grows with every throw, every practice session, every game. You know that you are a capable, skilled, and mentally tough player. You focus only on your own performance, not on your opponent's actions, knowing that your best game is all that matters. You are in control of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours."
2. **Precision Visualisation and the Quiet Eye:**
"Now, in your mind's eye, see yourself standing confidently at the oche. Notice your **solid stance and perfect posture**. Feel the dart perfectly balanced in your hand, ideally suited to your grip and throwing style. You **identify your dominant eye** and bring the dart up towards it as your aiming point, forming a precise right angle with your arm.
Now, **focus your gaze on your target** – the treble 20, or the bull's eye. Notice everything about it: the colours, the texture, the precise spot you intend to hit. This is your **'quiet eye'** – the final, unwavering fixation on the target just before you initiate your throw. You sustain this quiet eye for a longer duration, just like an expert, enhancing your throwing accuracy.
As you prepare to throw, you **direct your attention to a specific point on the dartboard**, rather than focusing on your own body movements. You see the dart flying effortlessly, smoothly, and precisely towards your chosen target. You **visualise the dart landing exactly where you intended**, perfectly upright in the board. Feel the satisfaction, the precision, the sheer accuracy of that perfect throw. Replay this perfect throw, with the dart sinking deep into the board, leaving ample space for your next dart. Experience the triumphant feeling of winning."
3. **Emotional Regulation and Resilience under Pressure:**
"You are equipped to handle any pressure situation with **calm, logic, and rationality**. When pressure arises, instead of allowing stress hormones to tense your muscles and raise your pulse, you **consciously take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, and exhale very slowly through your mouth**. This breathing technique immediately calms your nervous system, lowers your heart rate, and stabilises your hands, making them steady and precise.
You understand that negative thoughts, like 'I need to perform well' or 'I must hit this double', are just 'cars on the road'. You observe these thoughts without judgment, allowing them to pass by without getting 'hooked' or letting them dictate your performance. You gently tell yourself, **'Stop. Everything is going to be fine. I am going to be fine. Concentrate on the next visit.'**.
Even after a less-than-perfect throw, you maintain **positive body language**. You stand tall, chest out, shoulders back, radiating confidence. You even **smile**, knowing this simple action tricks your brain into believing everything is okay, promoting a positive mental state. You are resilient, bouncing back quickly from any setback, learning from every experience, and maintaining your composure. You transform any 'threat state' into a 'competition state', raising your performance under pressure."
4. **Effective Routines and Trigger Words:**
"You integrate a **powerful pre-shot routine**. As you step up to the oche, you silently repeat the word **'Smooth'**. This word cues your body to make the throwing movement as fluid and consistent as possible, ensuring replicability. As you raise the dart, your trigger word becomes **'60'** (or a word that reminds you to focus on your target, e.g., 'Target', 'Bull'). This word instantly narrows your attention, laser-focusing it on the precise spot you intend to hit on the dartboard, blocking out all distractions.
After each throw, you engage in a brief **post-shot routine**. You take a moment to reset, unhooking from any emotional response, good or bad, and returning to a 'blank canvas' for the next throw. This continuous cycle of routine and reset ensures sustained focus and optimal performance."
5. **Activating the Flow State:**
"You now effortlessly access the **'flow state'**. You are completely immersed in the activity, feeling as if you are on 'autopilot'. Your actions are automatic, precise, and executed without conscious effort, as if your body and mind are perfectly synchronised. Time seems to slow down, and you are simply throwing, hitting, and winning, with a profound sense of enjoyment and effortlessness. This is your optimal performance state, and you can access it more and more easily with each practice."
"To reinforce these powerful suggestions, I want you to create a mental anchor. Choose a subtle physical action you can do discreetly, perhaps a light touch on your arm, or a specific way you adjust your stance at the oche. As you make this physical action, repeat a chosen trigger word to yourself, such as 'Flow' or 'Master'.
Practice this now in your mind: **Touch your anchor spot, and say 'Flow' (or 'Master') to yourself.** Feel all the positive sensations and skills we’ve just embedded – the winning mindset, the quiet eye, the calm under pressure, the perfect routine, and the flow state – instantly come alive within you. This anchor is now a powerful tool, ready for you to use whenever you need to access these peak performance states."
"Now, it's time to gently bring yourself back to full waking awareness, feeling refreshed, confident, and empowered.
I will count from one to five. With each number, you will become more and more alert, more and more aware of your surroundings, carrying all the positive changes from this session with you.
**One**... feeling your awareness gently expand, becoming aware of your breath.
**Two**... wiggling your fingers and toes, feeling sensation return to your body.
**Three**... feeling energised and alert, ready to bring this new mental strength to your game.
**Four**... taking a deep, invigorating breath, feeling completely awake and alert.
**Five**... **Eyes open, wide awake, feeling fantastic and ready to excel!** Take a moment to stretch, and carry this powerful new mindset with you throughout your day."
